Brochure design in Perth, questions

Layout across all pages or panels, typesetting your copy, placing and sizing images, and building a print-ready file. A typical gig includes a concept for the cover and a spread, then rollout across the rest once you sign off. You should get a print-ready PDF with bleed and crop marks, a screen version for email, and the source file.

Structure. A brochure is read in fragments, so it works when someone can skim headings and captions and still get the story. Every spread should answer one question. The other half is restraint: two type sizes and a consistent grid across eight pages beats a different treatment on every page.

An 8 to 12 page brochure usually runs 1 to 2 weeks once copy and images are final. Larger documents or anything needing image sourcing and retouching runs 2 to 4 weeks. Supplying finished copy up front is the single biggest thing that keeps it at the short end, because reflowing text across a laid-out document is slow.

A flyer is one page and one message, handed out to catch attention. A brochure is multi-page and sits with someone who has already shown interest, so it can carry detail, proof and pricing. If you are trying to start a conversation, you want a flyer. If you are trying to finish one, a brochure earns its keep.

Print brochures come in multiples of four because of how sheets fold, so 8, 12 and 16 pages are the standard runs. A tri-fold DL is the cheap, common option for a service overview. Decide the page count before design starts, since adding four pages later means reworking the whole flow.

A print-ready PDF set to your printer's spec, a lower-resolution PDF for email, and the editable source file with fonts and links packaged. Ask for the packaged folder rather than just the document. Without the linked images and fonts, the source file is close to useless to the next designer.

In Perth, a tri-fold DL brochure from existing brand files typically runs $600 to $1,500. An 8 to 12 page brochure more commonly lands at $1,500 to $4,000, and a longer document with custom charts, image sourcing or a full capability statement runs higher. Printing is a separate cost paid to your printer.

The range on this page runs from about $49 to $164 an hour. Around $49 to $66 is a junior designer, $58 to $115 covers most gigs (an experienced designer working solo), and above $123 is a design lead. On a longer document, an experienced designer usually finishes in fewer hours, so the higher rate often costs less overall.

Ask to see a multi-page piece they have designed end to end, and flick through it for consistency: does the grid hold across every spread? Ask how they handle copy that runs long, because that is the situation every brochure gig hits.

Post a brochure design gig in under five minutes. Describe the work, set your budget and timeframe, and choose whether it is time-based or outcome-based. Local freelancers send a bid with a quote, you compare their profiles, portfolios and reviews, then pick the one that fits. Posting is free, so you only pay for the work.

Every gig is split into stages you both agree on up front. You fund each stage before the work starts and it is held securely through Stripe, then released once you sign off. No chasing invoices, and no paying for work that is not done.
